Rib Pain

So you're experiencing rib pain? Ribs can get cranky and when they are boy do they sure hurt!

*First, this needs to be distinguished from chest pain by a medical professional*

Each rib has at least 2 connections to the vertebrae on the "back"--the costotransverse and costovertebral joints.  These joints are richly innervated, which can be why they are so sensitive.  We're going to focus more on the backside of rib pain (versus the front of the body).

Excessive strain or load on these joints can result in abnormal firing patterns and then cause pain either where the joint is or referred.  The irritability of these joint capsules can lead to what feels like a rib may "come out of place" often; however, that is not truly what is happening.

So what can be done for these?

Manipulation or adjusting the rib often provides immediate relief.  After that, you should begin some movement that will help support and strengthen around the area.

Some exercises I like they may help provide relief are:

-Thoracic extension over a foam roller

-Cat/Cow (emphasizing thoracic spine)

-Banded thoracic rotations
